TLDR: magical realism with an existential heart

  • My given name is Caroline. I was born in the East London borough of Barking and Dagenham in the UK, at the tail end of 1969 — which is the basis of my claim to be a child of the 60s. My father is from the birthplace of the legendary outlaw Robin Hood, and my mother was born in the English county that inspired Bram Stoker’s tales of Count Dracula allowing me to also assert that I am a descendent of the spirits of a rebel and a vampire.

This romantic re-telling shines a light on my orientation towards the world. I have not ‘grown-out-of’ fairytales, instead I am learning more each day about the wisdom contained within them. I cannot see myself or my fellow humans as ‘consumers’, rather I believe we are story-forming/myth-making creatures. We are all creators. And when share our creations, whether stories or food, art or ritual we are participating in an unbroken ritual that has existed since the earliest of our kind.

  • The roots of Caroline’s artistic practice lie in her lifelong fascination with the more otherworldly aspects of human existence and what is often described as the ‘shadow side’ of the mind. Her desire to explore different realms of consciousness and to better understand her own and other's way of being in the world are informed as much by her psychotherapy sessions (focusing-orientated & existential) as by her formal studies in acting, directing, photography, filmmaking and painting.

  • My art includes a quality of the fairytale – exploring magical plays of light, a sense of ambiguity and the blurring of what we understand as reality with the reality of what be believe to be fantasy.

I want my art to feel mesmerising, engaging, spiritual. I want it to hold the gaze, excite the heart, to evoke mystery and wonder and connection to each other and our planet.

My ambition is to create art that contains essential truths of human existence in addition to reflecting the world we live in and my own experience of it. I want it to have layers of meaning — to weave myths and legends with the present day.
